Sohrab Crews: Fragments Aligned, Selected Works, 2003-2025

Sohrab Crews | Fragments Aligned, Selected Works, 2003 - 2025

Opening Night 8th May, 6pm - 10pm

Exhibition Dates 9th May - 24th May, Fri - Sun, 11am - 5pm

Always unravelling, Crews’ works are a visual mediation on the human desire for order.

Giving visuality to the complexities of life and the wider systems we live in these works offer an alternative visual order uprooting all that has come before.

Starting within his sketchbook, Crews’ ideas first find formulation as drawings and prose. It is here that Crews sits amongst his mind allowing his thoughts and reflections to play out before they find their place as visual realisations.

In a flash of geometric shapes and bold colours, fragments of text, materials and memories extend upon Crews’ sculptures, drawings and painting-collages. Materials are tirelessly collected and constructed into an ensemble of distinctive and irregularly shaped fragments. Words, gravel, graphite and paint are just some of these materials that Crews plays with to embed each fragment with its own narrative. The act of assembling, with its careful displacement and arrangement of each fragment imbues an intense energy into both the individual fragment and its spirit as a collective.

Crews seeks to construct a distinctive visual language, one that draws on and departs from both his previous works and the art historical canon. The evolution of his works opens up before us as this exhibition traverses his practice from earlier pieces such as Mother of God, 2003 to his most recent painting Torn Hero, 2024. Decades spent ambitiously disentangling the world around him, Crews’ works are a visual testament to the contemplation of the primal aspects of life - death, joy, sex and pain – and, by extension, the essence of art itself.

Employing a sequence of 16 four letter words, typically in a column format, words such as Faux, Copy and Play envelop the works as Crews’ poetic word-play amalgamates with their textured surfaces. This careful selection of words is combined with the use of found objects such as walking sticks and ceramic cats unearthed in local charity shops, creating a hybridity of material and word that relays discerning reflections on capitalism, over-consumption and the tyranny of advertising. Most recently, Crews has deployed these word patterns in Bannister Cats, 2025.  In reading the columns of the four-letter words one’s eyes stroke the manufactured bodies of the ceramic cats. Drawing visitors to engage with both its materiality and witty message on existence in the modern world, Bannister Cats are a representative display of the humorous yet pointed messages embedded within Crews' work.

These wider reflections sit in dialogue with autobiographical elements that run throughout, with works such as Now Your Name is Sam, 2023 speaking to Crews’ personal experiences with identity, patriotism, death and survival.

Richard Norris is a musician, producer and DJ, who made his first record in the post-punk, DIY era, aged 14. At the dawn of acid house, he co-produced the legendary album Jack The Tab, before forming The Grid with Soft Cell's Dave Ball, whose tracks include the Balearic classic 'Floatation' and the million-selling 'Swamp Thing'. His innovative Beyond The Wizards Sleeve project with Erol Alkan, alongside his hundreds of psychedelic, dub, ambient and electronic mixes and collaborations, are testimony to a lifetime at the forefront of music and the counterculture.

Toufic Beyhum

OPENING NIGHT 13th March (6pm - 10pm)

EXHIBITION DATES 14th - 30th March (Thursdays - Sundays, 11am - 5pm)*

*Please note - On Saturday 29th we will be opening at 1.30pm and closing at 6.30pm

FREE ADMISSION WITH TICKET

Join us for the opening night on 13th March, with live music from the Fairfield House Jazz Band, delicious snacks and a fully stocked bar. This will be your only chance to meet with the artist and leave with a signed book.

There are photographs that capture a single moment, a single idea—and then there are photographs that unravel a thousand meanings. Toufic Beyhum’s work falls into the latter category. His images present themselves as visual allegories, layered with cultural nuance and metaphor. His frames are not passive but demand interaction, compelling observers to lend their own rendition, making the work as much about the viewer as it is about the subject.

At the heart of Toufic’s photography lies a poignant commentary on culture, laced with sublime drollery. Whether it’s the falconry-inspired hoods of Burqa, the emoji-masks redefined through Namibian craftsmanship in Amoji, or the juxtaposition of streetwear sneakers with traditional thobes in Thobes & Creps, his photographs celebrate the tension between heritage and modernity.

This plurality, commonly found in his work, can be traced back to the constant movement that has defined Toufic’s life. Born in war-torn Beirut in 1974, he was exiled to London as a child of war, an experience that imbued his work with a sensitivity to cultural displacement and transformation. Later, his career as a creative took him across the globe, further enriching his visual lexicon and grounding his photography in an exploration of identity, heritage, and the interplay of cultures.

Toufic’s series Burqa has been acquired by institutions such as LACMA and The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, and it was featured in Yale Books’ Islamic Art – Past, Present, Future (2019). His photographic book Emotions in Motion (2007) offered an unfiltered glimpse into the lives of Berlin's U-Bahn commuters, cementing his reputation as a photographer capable of finding narratives in the everyday. The book received widespread acclaim, with copies held in the New York Public Library, Berlin’s Universitätsbibliothek, and the International Center of Photography in New York City.

His Amoji series, meanwhile, has travelled from South Korea to Dubai, Norway, and beyond, becoming part of the permanent collection at Oslo’s Preus Museum.

His photography has been exhibited in London, Berlin, LA, New York, Milan, South Korea, Washington DC, Dubai, Sharjah, Nizhny Tagil, Oslo, and Miami (Arizona). His work has been featured in:

I love to share the benefits of Yoga - drawing on my years of experience and trainings. I believe and have experienced the benefits of yoga which go beyond just the physical stretching.

In a time when we are facing stress and uncertainty, Yoga can be used to help reconnect at a deeper level and offer methods and ways to destress and to connect with the body rather than the mind.

My passion is to facilitate the journey inwards through movement, breath and stillness. During my classes, we will flow, feel, experience, expand our awareness and come away feeling more connected, grounded and peaceful.

Homer Sykes

Roseberry Road Studios hosts a retrospective by British photographer Homer Sykes.

FREE ADMISSION WITH TICKET

Homer Sykes is a professional magazine and documentary photographer. His principal commissions in Britain during the 1970s and 1980s were for the "weekend colour supplements," such as The Telegraph, The Sunday Times, The Observer, You, and the Sunday Express magazines. He covered weekly news for Newsweek, Time, and the former Now! Magazine, documenting conflicts in Israel, Lebanon, and Northern Ireland, as well as weekly news in the UK. Over the last fifty years, he has captured numerous magazine portraits of both the famous and not so famous—at home, at work, and at play. Alongside his commercial magazine assignments, Sykes has always worked on personal photographic documentary projects.

In the 1970s, he began what has become an ongoing career project documenting traditional British folklore customs and annual events. His first book, Once a Year, Some Traditional British Customs (Gordon Fraser), was published in 1977. In 2016, Dewi Lewis Publishing reissued this volume with over 50 'new' images from his archive. Sykes is the author and co-author-photographer of nine books about Britain, as well as Shanghai Odyssey (Dewi Lewis Publishing) and On the Road Again (Mansion Editions). The latter, an American project, began in 1969 while Sykes was in college. The photographic road trip was repeated in 1971, with the work then set aside for thirty years. In 1999 and 2001, Sykes traveled once again by Greyhound bus, crisscrossing America to document the ‘down home’ idiosyncrasies of everyday middle America.

In 2002, Sykes established his self-publishing concern, Mansion Editions, which has published On the Road Again and Hunting with Hounds. More recently, Cafe Royal Books has published 30 zines of his work.

As an award-winning photographer, Sykes has never been busier, managing his extensive archive of over twenty thousand content-rich images, working on personal projects, and shooting new material. His work is held by many private collectors and national collections. For ten years, he was a Visiting Lecturer at the London College of Communication (University of the Arts London), where he conducted group and one-to-one tutorials with both MA and BA students studying Photojournalism and Documentary Photography.

Sykes' vintage prints are represented by the James Hyman Gallery in London and by Francoise Morin at Les Douches La Galerie in Paris.

Every Brilliant Thing

Content Guidance: The story contains possible triggering and sensitive material. Mental health issues like depression and coping with the suicide of a loved one are at times part of the narrative.

Doors are open from 6pm. We will have our bar open and a special pop up stall from Bath Mind, who will be providing information on their services and available to chat throughout the evening.

Show starts at 7.30pm. Ticket holders are not allocated seating, and so seating will be on a first come first served basis. We also have the option for people to sit on the floor with a cushion if they so wish, at the request of the performer.

“I was a 7-year-old boy when my Mum tried to take her own life. So, I made a list for her, of everything worth living for. Come and be a part of it”. In this solo performance some of the the audience at times are invited to help make some parts of the play. As every audience is different, every performance is specially created for that group of people.

This powerful, laugh-out-loud funny yet poignant play, directed by Polly Whitfield and created by playwright Duncan MacMillan, raises awareness around mental health issues such as depression and suicide, yet addresses these in such a gentle way to highlight the irrepressible resilience of the human spirit. The play explores humanity and human kindness, perhaps at a time when it seems sometimes in short supply. The performance is 75 minutes, no interval.

Philip Robinson and LIVING ROOM THEATRE previous production was All Is Mended: a repurposing of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” setting it in a care home to tell the real-life stories of elders in some of Devon’s care homes during the Covid pandemic.

EVERY BRILLIANT THING has been touring for the last 18 months, in theatres and arts centres, village halls, gardens, health conferences and in living rooms too. This is your last to catch it before the production heads to mainland Europe & Scandinavia, and west to the USA. It is a one-person play like no other, come and be wowed.

Tickets - £12 (Or Pay What You Can)

BIOPHILIA & Interactions between the built and the natural environment in Britain today.
